On July 3rd, Aetna announced that they would acquire Humana in a $37 billion deal. Aetna has addressed that the merger was intended to match Humana's healthy Medicare Advantage market share with their diversified portfolio and commercial strength. Medicare Advantage composed 30% of the senior insurance market last year, and is expected to increase as the baby boomers reach the Medicare age. Aetna has stated that their goals for this merger are to deliver quality health care to seniors at lower costs and develop a more consumer-focused market. Aetna has also indicated they will remain based in Louisville, KY. This transaction will make Aetna the second-largest managed care company in the country.
